Aerys II Targaryen (AKA The Mad King) was King of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros before Robert Baratheon's rebellion. He died before the setting of the Song of Ice and Fire book series and HBO show Game of Thrones. Aerys was plotting to destroy the entire capital of King's Landing with wildfire rather than be conquered by Robert Baratheon.
