I use Dire Studio Shutter Count on Apple MacBook Pro. It told me 1D Mark iii shutter count was stored in the photo files, and asked me to open a file. I opened a raw file as instructed, and I got this as below. This is not the file number, so it did get it from somewhere in the file. But I am not sure this is correct or not.
07-03-2014 01:27 PM. Canon doesn't make this obvious. Nikon embeds the shutter count in each image (you look at the last image you took). But Canon doeesn't do that -- nor do they display it in camera -- nor do they include any utilities that can view it. The info is maintained by the camera, but Canon doesn't make it easy to access.

Rebels usually have a shutter life of around 50k. I know these are estimates and I know of cameras that far exceed it. I know a guy that has a 1Ds Mk III exactly like mine. The Canon estimate for this workhourse is 300k but he went pass 1,000,000. They claim that 33% of the 1Ds Mk III's will do that.
